Joanna Lumley today held a press conference today amid claims she was smeared by the Ministry of Defence.
Veterans minister Kevan Jones said she had not done enough to help them since claiming Ms Lumley was guilty of a 'deathly silence' over Gurkhas' rights. Ms Lumley said she had never met nor spoken to Mr Jones. Peter Carroll, who has been campaigning for the Gurkhas since 2004 also spoke, mentioning the lady in Cranbrook, Kent who had made the initial suggestion that Ms Lumley become involved in the Gurkha Justice Campaign.
Ms Lumley said she still believed Mr Brown backed the Gurkha campaign 'to the hilt' and would have been as 'shocked' about the recent reports as she was.

Mystery woman meets Joanna Lumley!
In 1998 I wrote to Joanna Lumley asking for her help. I was about to undertake a 100km trek in the Himalayas in aid of a UK charity for severely disabled children – Whizz-Kidz.
My fundraising plan was to ask local people for their help and Joanna fell into this category. I also knew that her father had been a commanding officer in the Gurkhas, so a great fit as the Gurkhas are based in Nepal! Joanna made an extremely generous donation and my fundraising was launched!
Ten years later Joanna Lumley and I were to make contact once more – and again with a Ghurkha theme! In October of last year in my local town of Cranbrook I signed a petition raised by Peter Carroll, Ghurkha Justice campaigner and Liberal Democrat parliamentary candidate for Maidstone and Weald to raise public awareness and gain government settlement rights for Gurkhas to stay in Britain. Peter has become involved with the Gurkha campaign in 2003 when he was approached to assist a retired Gurkha who was facing deportation from the UK after 22 years army service…
Peter happened to mention to me that the campaign was not getting the recognition and gathering the momentum that he would have liked and I said ‘Why don’t you get in touch with Joanna Lumley, her father was a commanding officer with the Gurkhas?’ A chance remark that has made SO much difference to the lives of Gurkhas, people who have laid down their lives for our nation.
Subsequently I saw the television footage, I heard the news and rejoiced in it, I saw Joanna Lumley on TV campaigning for the Gurkhas, however I didn’t put two and two together until I saw by chance outside my local newsagent (in June 2009!) a board stating 'Woman was key to Gurkhas camapign’ and another ‘Who is mystery woman?' I began to do the maths and realised that is was ME!!
I contacted the local newspaper, the Kent Messenger and informed them that their mystery was solved! Peter Carroll was informed – he had wanted to thank me but couldn’t remember my name and the word had gone out to find me!
I contacted the local newspaper, the Kent Messenger and informed them that their mystery was solved! Peter Carroll was informed – he had wanted to thank me but couldn’t remember my name and the word had gone out to find me!
I offered advice, Peter took it and acted on it, Joanna Lumley agreed to become part of the campaign, and the rest, as they say, is now good solid history and justice! We all agreed that the smallest things can often have the biggest impact.
I run a business as an Independent Distributor for Utility Warehouse and at a recent Utility Warehouse convention a Gurkha, Denish Grange, who also runs his own UW business came on stage with a testimonial as to how he loves the business! Not only was he extremely excited about his business, but he also received a standing ovation!
My ongoing Gurkha plans are now to attend a Himalayan Gurkha Rotary Club charity event in Tunbridge Wells in October and next year I plan to walk as part of a team of four for the Gurkha charity (100km in 30 hours overnight on the South Downs!) I must be mad, but it runs (or walks??!) in the family. My son Patrick, 18 has recently completed together with a friend a 300 mile walk from Kent to Wales for Help4Heroes, for which Joanna and Peter kindly sponsored him.
I feel extremely proud to have been a tiny part of a huge outcome; to be part of something that has not only changed history but also changed people’s lives. So, watch this space!!
