How to fish with bait
Article updated 4 Jan 2011
I'm not going to go through every type of trace or what hooks to use for what fish as that is an in depth article all on it's own, Look for search terms like below:
- Aberdeen hooks, sea fishing hooks
That should be enough to get you going, don't want you to go into 'melt down' on knowledge before you even start. You will be amazed at the info you will pick up by doing your own research.
The commonly used bait for all kinds of fishing bait is worms.
Two types really, lugworm and ragworm, both deadly baits on their day. To simplify things, if you are going to be fishing over sand then use lugworm, if fishing over rock then ragworm is probably the best bet. It's not a hard and fast rule but it will get you started. Ask for advice in your local tackle shop, most owners will be pleased to advice you as they will recognise that you could possibly be a new customer that could keep coming back, time after time.
Another popular bait is mackerel, herring or blueys. They are a good oily fish bait and attract all sorts of different species over the year, again that knowledge will come with trial and error, talking with others while fishing, on forums, reading fishing mag's, in tackle shops and a host of other places. Fish baits are normally cut into strips but you could be using whole mackerel if fishing over wrecks from a boat for the likes of conger or ling and even big cod.
How to fish with bait can be as easy or as hard as you make it. I would advise that you fish from a safe pier or jetty the first few trips, that way you don't have to cast far, you can always drop your bait straight down which actually is the best place for it to be! You also have the chance that you could be fishing next to an experienced angler that might be willing to give you a bit of advice once they realise you are just starting out. Every venue fishes differently.
I always go with the thought that I'm going to enjoy the trip, the venue, the company, the fresh air, the views etc. Everyone wants to catch fish but I try to count them as a bonus, once you get started it's amazing how BIG that bonus can get and how often!
